Facebook Takes A Step Forward in Support of Same-Sex Couples

By |Last Updated: July 5, 2012|2 min read|

This week Facebook rolled out status icons allowing same-sex couples to indicate that they are married. Now, gay married couples no longer need to use the same visual indicator as straight married couples.

The change follows closely on the heels of Apple’s inclusion of same-sex “Emoji” icons for the iOS 6 release this fall. The Facebook update also takes the 2011 relationship status changes one step further from “In a civil union,” and “In a domestic partnership.”

Facebook and GLAAD

Speaking on the 2011 Facebook relationship status change, GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios said, “Today, Facebook sent a clear message in support of gay and lesbian couples to users across the globe…By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the U.S. and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media. As public support for marriage equality continues to grow, we will continue to work for the day when all couples have the opportunity to marry and have their relationship recognized by their community, both online and off.”

Additionally, just this past June Facebook also became the first social media company to receive a GLAAD media award. The two organizations have been working together to combat anti-LGBT bullying online.

What the new Facebook icons mean

It may be a small and subtle change but it’s one that I think has been a long time coming. I can only hope that this indicates a strong mave towards a greater acceptance of same-sex couples and support for their right to marriage.
